Boys 5A Regional Qualifiers: The Road to Austin
Editor’s Note: This is the first in a series that will be released this week on the upcoming 5A and 6A Regionals Meets. Region 1 - Lubbock, Region 2 - Arlington, Region 3 - Webster, Region 4 - San Antonio.
Championship season is here. Roughly 700 athletes started this journey at District meets in mid-April. District cut the field to Area. Area cut it again. Now 64 boys remain across the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m — sixteen per region, all of them having earned their spot the hard way.
This coming weekend, May 1–2, four regional meets across the state will decide which nine boys in each event punch their ticket to the UIL 5A State Meet at Myers Stadium in Austin on May 15. Here’s what the data says heading in.
The Format
Sixty-four athletes, 16 per region. The top two finishers in each of the four regional meets advance automatically. A ninth and final berth goes to the fastest third-place finisher from across all four regions — the statewide wild card. That rule makes race execution a genuine strategic variable: a third-place finish in a fast regional can be worth more than a comfortable second in a slow one.
The data here shows each qualifier’s Area mark (their official time from the Area meet two weeks ago), their Season Best, and their Personal Best. Wide gaps between the Area mark and season best usually mean one thing: a runner who had enough to advance and knew it.

Region 1 may be the most wide-open 800m race of the weekend. Ten athletes are within roughly two seconds of each other at the top, and no one in the field has broken 1:56 this season. That kind of parity almost guarantees a tactical, position-driven race — the kind where the athlete with the best kick, not necessarily the best fitness, walks away with a state bid.
Braylon Kinzie (Wichita Falls Memorial), William Escobar (Lubbock-Cooper), and Jaylen Green (El Paso Chapin) have the fastest season bests, but the margins are thin enough that anyone in the top six could realistically finish first or fourth on a different day. Grapevine brings three qualifiers — Barnett, King, and Cooper — which could make them a factor in how the race tactically unfolds.
Jordan Diaz of El Paso Del Valle is worth noting: he qualifies in all three distance events out of Region 1, making him one of only two athletes in the state to enter regionals as a triple qualifier in the middle-to-distance events.

Region 2 has the deepest 800m field in the state. The top three — Jayden Washington (Red Oak), Andrew Malan (Frisco Lebanon Trail), and Dylan Grzywinski (Frisco Wakeland) — are all capable of running in the 1:53–1:54 range, which projects to a legitimate state podium threat from whoever advances.
Washington owns a 1:52.99 personal best and ran 1:53.40 this season. He ran 1:55.08 at Area, leaving a second and a half on the table. Malan, who enters as a triple qualifier in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, ran 1:53.98 this season. Both have the fitness to compete for a state medal in three weeks.
Frisco Wakeland is the only program to place two athletes in the Region 2 800m (Grzywinski and Adam Lane), and Grzywinski also qualifies in the mile. Noah Converse of The Colony (1:55.08) is the bubble threat most likely to chase down a wild-card third with a big race.

| 16 | Ivan Armendariz | Crosby | 2:00.46 | 2:00.46 | 2:00.46 |
Region 3 is where the 800m conversation starts and likely ends. Roy Ramirez of La Porte enters with a 1:50.84 — the fastest 800m qualifier in the state by more than a full second. He is not merely the regional favorite; he’s the odds-on favorite to win the event at state.
Behind Ramirez, Colby Huntress of Austin Anderson (1:51.54 PB, 1:52.70 SB) is the second-fastest qualifier in the state and is also entered in the 1600m, where he leads all 64 regional qualifiers. John Fowler of Beaumont West Brook (1:52.33) is right there as well. These three men in the same race is a genuine sub-1:52 scenario at the front.
The wild-card math is worth watching here: Matthew Christian of Port Arthur Memorial (1:53.15) and Benjamin Canchola of Iowa Colony (1:53.66) both have season bests fast enough to challenge for the statewide third-place slot if they can run their best. Region 3 may produce the fastest third-place mark of any region, making even fifth or sixth in this race potentially irrelevant to anyone hoping to wild-card out of a different region.

| 16 | Nathan Perez | San Antonio Fox Tech | 2:02.61 | 2:01.79 | 2:01.79 |
Channon Davis of San Antonio Wagner (1:53.28) leads Region 4 and is a frontrunner for an auto-qualifier to state alongside Jacksen Ahlman of McAllen (1:53.97 PB). The most intriguing subplot here is Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, which enters two athletes — Michael Castillo and Joseph Gavril — both of whom ran their Area marks five seconds slower than their season bests. Castillo’s 1:55.18 and Gavril’s 1:55.70 are in the mix for third-place wild-card consideration if they execute.

Andrew DeYoung of Grapevine (4:17.84) leads Region 1, with Aledo’s Tyler Connelly close behind at 4:22.06. DeYoung doubles in the 3200m, as does Connelly — two of the busier championship-weekend schedules in the state. Andrew Truax of El Paso High, John Silva of Denton and Jordan Diaz of El Paso Del Valle should be in the hunt.

This is Andrew Malan’s regional. His 4:12.01 season best is nine full seconds faster than the next qualifier — a gap so large it almost doesn’t fit in a normal championship context. He ran 4:31.26 at Area. That 19-second difference between his Area mark and season best is a statement: Malan knows exactly what he’s doing, and he wasn’t remotely extended two weeks ago.
Lucas Lovejoy places three athletes in this regional (Reid, Arceneau, and Sharma), making them the most represented single program in any 5A distance event this postseason. Joseph Reid ran 4:30.69 at Area but owns a 4:17.15 personal best — more than 13 seconds of gap — suggesting he, too, was very much in conservation mode.
The wild-card math from Region 2 could get interesting. If Malan runs 4:12–4:13 and pulls four or five athletes to sub-4:22 with him, the third-place time out of this region could seriously threaten the statewide wild card.

The fastest miler in 5A is Colby Huntress of Austin Anderson. His 4:10.69 leads all 64 regional qualifiers in the state. Right behind him is Jaxon Asbill of Dayton at 4:11.84 — and they share a region. Both ran their Area marks conservatively (Huntress at 4:18.69, Asbill at 4:23.67), both have more gear left, and both are legitimate state title contenders.
Region 3’s 1600m depth doesn’t stop there. Aiden Fitzgerald of Friendswood has run 4:17.59, John Fowler of Beaumont West Brook ran 4:19.19 as recently as Area, and five athletes in this field have season bests under 4:21. That kind of density means the third-place time out of Region 3 could very well be the statewide wild card — which means the runners in sixth or seventh place in this race, heading into the final 400, will be very much aware of what’s happening around the rest of the state.
Georgetown is worth watching as a program: both Georgetown High (Morales and Mangum) and Georgetown East View (Wilson) qualify in this event, putting three qualifiers within a few miles of each other.

Nathan Salinas of Sharyland leads Region 4 at 4:17.29 — fast enough to be competitive for a top-five finish at state. Alexander Nava of Weslaco East (4:19.71) is the other likely auto-qualifier, and he also enters the 3200m. Samuel Olivares of McAllen (4:21.11) is the prime wild-card threat if he runs close to his season best.
Boerne is the program story in Region 4: Aaron Garcia, Brayden Scott, and Shawn Edwards (Boerne Champion, just across town) all make the mile field, with all three running Area marks in the 4:31 range against season bests around 4:25. That trio of athletes from neighboring programs, all holding 5–6 seconds of reserve, suggests one or more big performances on the horizon.
Azael Davila of La Joya Palmview has the most eye-catching gap in the region: a 4:25.65 season best against a 4:38.74 Area mark — 13 full seconds left behind. He also qualifies in the 3200m, pointing again to a runner who was managing his energy across multiple races on an Area day.

The single biggest gap between any athlete’s Area mark and season best — across all three events, all four regions — belongs to Tyler Connelly of Aledo. His Area mark in the 3200m was 9:45.97. His season best is 9:09.90. That is a 36-second difference. To put it in concrete terms: if Connelly runs his season best this weekend, he would be lapping the back of his own Area field. He is not running to conserve fitness at this point in the season; he is coiled.
DeYoung of Grapevine (9:31.91 SB, 9:25.15 PB) is the only other athlete in the region who projects to challenge him at the front. The rest of the qualifying field drops off considerably — third through eighth is a fairly wide cluster in the 9:30–9:55 range.
Region 2 — Districts 9–16

Malan’s 9:14.90 leads the region, but Hayden Gaunt of Dallas Wilson (9:19.64) is a genuinely serious threat and has already beaten Malan in a head-to-head 3200m setting this season (Texas Relays). Both are potential state qualifiers. Lucas Lovejoy places three runners in this field — Arceneau, Reid, and Sharma — each carrying a season best well clear of their Area mark (Reid ran 10:01.21 at Area against a 9:24.19 SB; Arceneau ran 10:02.06 against a 9:21.25 SB). The Lovejoy distance program has three athletes showing 40-second gaps between their Area and season bests. That is a coaching strategy, not a coincidence.
Several athletes in the middle of the field also have substantial hidden fitness. Jake Mooney (Midlothian Heritage) ran 10:27.82 at Area with a 9:42.31 personal best — a 45-second gap — and Gavin Czerwieski (Midlothian) ran 10:27.64 against a 9:45.69 season best. Both are likely running very different races this weekend.

Jaxon Asbill of Dayton ran 9:29.86 at Area. His season best is 9:04.75 — the fastest 3200m mark among all 64 regional qualifiers in the state, and a time that would be competitive at most 5A state meets in recent memory. His 25-second gap between Area and season best is a reminder of something that runs through this entire dataset: by the time athletes get to the Area meet, the competition required to advance is often well below what the top athletes are actually capable of running.
Aiden Fitzgerald of Friendswood (9:12.57 PB, 9:17.28 SB) is clearly capable of running with Asbill, and Friendswood places three athletes in this event — Fitzgerald, Lowery, and Hillier. Georgetown is well represented too, with Morales and Mangum from Georgetown High joining Kingston Wilson from Georgetown East View.
The depth of Region 3 across all three distance events is worth naming explicitly: this region produced the fastest qualifier in the 800m (Roy Ramirez), the fastest qualifier in the 1600m (Colby Huntress), and the fastest qualifier in the 3200m (Jaxon Asbill). No other region is close to that across-the-board.

Region 4 has an unusual subplot: siblings. Alexander Nava (9:18.78 SB) and Aaron Nava (9:27.11 PB), both of Weslaco East, are competing in the same event and could both make the state meet — or one could knock the other out of wild-card contention depending on how the race unfolds.
Alexander leads the region on paper and is a legitimate state qualifier. Samuel Olivares of McAllen is right there at 9:22.03 for the season, though his Area mark of 9:55.75 — a 33-second gap — is another reminder that what we saw at Area is not what we’ll see this weekend.
Dante Jimenez of Eagle Pass Winn is the most extreme gap in this field: a 9:55.20 season best against a 10:30.36 Area mark, 35 seconds apart. He also doubles in the 800m, where a similar pattern appears. Jimenez is clearly a legitimate distance runner managing a heavy schedule.
Watching for the Wild Card
The ninth state qualifier in each event comes from the statewide wild card — the fastest third-place finisher across all four regionals. That means athletes who finish third, and even some who finish fourth, need to know what’s happening in the other regions as they race.
In the 800m, Ramirez and Huntress are so fast in Region 3 that the third-place finisher there could legitimately be the fastest third-place in the state. In the 1600m, the wild card race is between Region 2 (Malan could drag the field fast) and Region 3 (the Huntress/Asbill 1-2 could produce a fast third). In the 3200m, Asbill’s presence in Region 3 and Connelly’s coiled season best in Region 1 make those the two regions to watch for a fast third-place time.
But that is all just words. This is Championship Season and nothing is promised nor guaranteed. This coming weekend it all gets settled on the track.
The state meet is May 15 in Austin. TDP will have previews and coverage as championship weekend unfolds.
